"Janis Joplin fan?" Jake's Mom asked as she walked over to a record player. "Mom, no." Jake said. "I love her." I said smiling. "My Mom is a big fan. I heard her a lot growing up." "Oh really?" She asked. She had a huge smile on her face. She put on a record and it started to play. She sat back down with us at the coffee table. We all started to eat. His Dad was eating like a pig and being really loud. It was driving me crazy and grossing me out. "So, lovely, how's work?" His Mom asked. I looked at Jake. He just continued to eat. He looked up at me, then to his Mom. "Work kinda sucks for her right now." Jake said. I looked at her and she was looking at me. I just smiled. "You don't have to be shy." She told me. I giggled. I couldn't understand how I was being shy. I was trying my hardest not to be. It was quiet for a few minutes. His Mom started giggling. "Lovely, you've got a peice of corn on your nose." His Mom said. I looked at Jake. He didn't have corn on his nose. I looked at his Dad and he didn't either. "You!" Jake said looking at me laughing. "Oh." I said wiping my nose with my napkin. "She's talking to you." Jake told me. "She calls every woman lovely." "Oooooh." I said. "I'm sorry. It's a habit. I'll try to remember to call you Reggie." She said. I think I would have rather been called Lovely than Reggie, but I didn't bother to say anything. "Reggie, tell me about your parents. That's such a unique name. Is there a story behind it?" She asked. "Um, I I'm not exactly sure where my name came from." I said. "I'd love to meet your parents." She said smiling. "Too soon for that, Ma." Jake said. I looked up at Jake's Dad. They looked a lot a like. He looked like he could be a lot better looking if he cut his hair. His hair made him look much older than he appeared to be. "Well, maybe you have some questions for us." His Dad said looking at me. "Not that I can think of. . ." I said. "We split up for a couple of years when we thought we were too young and just making a mistake." His Mom said. "Mom." Jake said looking embarassed. "He went to Japan to further his education. We got back together a couple years later." She said. "Oh god, do we have to hear your stupid Japan stories again?" Jake asked. "Nah." His Dad said. "Excuse me." He got up and walked down the hall. His Mom smiled at me. "He did all kinds of amazing things in Japan that I never thought he could do." She said. "We never did get to see pictures though. They lost one of his bags at the airport." "When was that?" I asked. "About 12 1/2 years ago now I think." She said. "I think that time apart only made our relationship much stronger." His Dad came back and sat down. "Right honey?" She asked him. "What?" He asked. "Our time apart only made us stronger." She said. He just nodded and stood up. "I'll get started on these dishes." He said. He walked out of the room with his cup and plate. "It must have been nice to go to Japan. That's too bad about the pictures." I said. She just nodded smiling. We talked for a while longer and his Dad never came back out to us. We said goodbye and head back to my apartment. "Something strange occured to me." I said. "What's that?" He asked. "The whole Japan thing." I said. "Yeah, he's full of shit. I'm surprised my Mom beleives it. I hate hearing his made up stories too. He didn't go on no six month hike either. The man is so out of shape." He said. I sighed. "If he wasn't in Japan. Where do you think he was?" "I don't know. The few times I talked to him, he mentioned a new friend he made that he was helping out. She had a baby." He said. "He was probably fucking her." "She had a baby?" I asked. He gave me a strange look. "Yeah." He said. "Just a little bizzare if you ask me." I said. "My Mom left us about 12 and a half years ago and had my brother Leo." "You don't think. . .?" "I don't know. . ." I said. "Oh, Christ." He said. "I wouldn't doubt him doing that for one second." I sighed again and started to feel a little upset. "Ask your Mom if the guy she was with was named Chuck." He said. "Oh, I don't know Jake." I said. "I want to know." He said. I nodded. "I'll ask her."
